Billy Mills Running Journal

A week training exerpt from the spring before the 1964 Olympic Games. Mills coached himself while a marine lieutenant at Camp Pendleton in California.

Monday:A.M.-2-mile warmup; 4-mile "tee-to-greens" on golf course, consisting of 18 340-yard runs covering every hole with 150-yard rest between; 2-mile cooldown. P.M.-2-mile warmup; 2 miles of repeat 110s; 1-mile cooldown. Total: 14 miles

Tuesday:A.M.-2-mile warmup; 1 mile of repeat 110s; 2-mile cooldown. P.M.-1-mile warmup; 2 miles of sprint 150, float 70 in 8:50; 4-mile cooldown. Total: 12 miles

Wednesday:A.M.-3-mile warmup; 1 mile of repeat 110s; 1-mile easy; 4 x 880 in 1:59 to 2:00 with 330-yard rest between; 2-mile cooldown. P.M.-4-mile warmup; cross-country run on sand with 1.5 miles easy and 1.5 miles at race pace; 2-mile cooldown. Total: 20 miles

Thursday:A.M.-3-mile warmup; 2 miles of easy 110s. P.M.-whirlpool and rest. Total: 5 miles

Friday:A.M.-1-mile warmup, then whirlpool. P.M.-14 miles easy. Total: 15 miles

Saturday:A.M.-3-mile warmup; 1 mile of repeat 110s; 6x1000 yards (slower than race pace), with 330-yard rest between; 1-mile cooldown. Total: 18 miles

Sunday:A.M.-2-mile warmup; 1 mile easy 110s; 1 mile hard 110s; 1 mile easy 110s; 1-mile cooldown. Total: 6 miles

Total for week: 90 miles

In 1965, leading up to his world record 6-mile in June, Mills averaged 82 miles a week for 8 weeks. He knew that he was in great shape when he ran personal bests for the mile and 3-mile during weeks when he didn't taper off.
