Schemmel's fastest mile ended up being 3:58.18 and I believe that he ran this time while still running for Kansas State University.
To my knowledge, he has the fastest mile time in South Dakota history. Schemmel ran for Madison in high school.

Heidenreich's fastest mile ended up being 3:58.4. As far as I know he has ran the second fastest mile in South Dakota history.
He ended his career with a 3:38.8 1500 pr. Heidenreich ran for Watertown in high school. He has a biography that he co-authored
called Running Back.
The Track and Field News list shows the time for each athlete's first ever sub-4.
